Considerations for Children Enrolled in Medicaid During COVID-19

Washington, DC- The Medicaid program covers more than 28 million children from families with low-incomes, including Black, Indigenous, and/or Latinx children who disproportionately experience inequities in the social determinants of health. In its new op-ed, the Institute for Medicaid Innovation asks, how have these influences been compounded during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Using a social determinants of health framework, the Institute for Medicaid Innovation (IMI), a non-profit, nonpartisan research and policy organization, assessed the impact of the intersection of the pandemic and the social determinants of health on children enrolled in Medicaid. “Opportunities to support optimal health for children in Medicaid beyond the COVID-19 pandemic,” was published in the American Journal of Public Health and explores strategies to decrease the negative health impacts for children in the Medicaid population during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspiration for the op-ed came from discussions with Medicaid stakeholders including state Medicaid programs, health plans, and provider groups. Concerns were expressed that children, especially those enrolled in Medicaid, were being forgotten during the early stages of the pandemic. Since then, rates of COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children have received additional news coverage. Not only are children affected by the novel coronavirus, but they are also experiencing significant physical, social, and emotional consequences.

The article presents opportunities to support optimal health for children in Medicaid beyond the pandemic including facilitating Medicaid enrollment, responding to increasing social needs and widening inequities, and improving access to healthcare.
