New Funding Supports Top Research Group’s Exploration of Alternate Maternity Models of Care in Medicaid

The Institute will lead a critical investigation into current maternal health practices, highlighting new opportunities for high-value, evidence-based models of care

Washington, DC – The Institute for Medicaid Innovation (IMI), a non-profit, nonpartisan research organization, secured funding from Yellow Chair Foundation to launch a new project on identifying innovative maternal models of care that are high-value, evidence-based but underutilized in Medicaid.  They are specifically focusing in on midwifery-led models of care (both in-hospital and freestanding birth centers) and home visiting programs (both community health workers and doulas). The Institute hopes to identify sustainable financial models for access and coverage to care for women enrolled in Medicaid, an area with limited previous research.

Presently, the United States has the highest rate of adverse maternal and infant health outcomes amongst developed countries, including preterm birth and maternal mortality and morbidity. For black and native American women and infants, these rates may be exponentially higher. Medicaid currently covers half of all births nationally. This makes Medicaid a critical service, one with the opportunity to utilize evidence-based maternal models of care to help enact lasting changes in the outcomes for the mothers and newborns it serves.

Through funding from Yellow Chair Foundation, IMI will identify innovative initiatives and best practices in Medicaid that use high-value models of care such as midwifery and freestanding birth centers. The research will culminate in a toolkit that will serve as a comprehensive resource of evidenced-based information. The aggregated material will ultimately support the exploration and application of other maternal models of care in Medicaid, encouraging partnerships among managed care organizations, clinicians, and state Medicaid programs.
