New Grant Awarded to IMI Focuses on Medicaid Health Plan Innovation During COVID-19

Washington, DC— The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a global shift in approaches and understanding of health and health coverage. From nurse engagement with members to enrollment forms, Medicaid health plans have altered the methods they have used to connect with and serve their member populations. The Institute for Medicaid Innovation (IMI) has been awarded funding by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Episcopal Health Foundation to develop a compendium sharing initiatives led by Medicaid managed care organizations in partnership with community-based organizations that were adopted during COVID-19 to address social determinants of health and health equity.

IMI, a non-profit, nonpartisan Medicaid research, and policy organization, will lead this work in collaboration with national and state leaders in health equity and social determinants of health, as well as key Medicaid stakeholders.  The project seeks to identify  and amplify  innovative approaches to modify general Medicaid program functions, launching new initiatives related to COVID-19, and examples of how both  approaches address social determinants of health, health equity, and the role of community-based organizations.

IMI is pleased to receive this grant award from both the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Episcopal Health Foundation. This work is timely and can inform many programs that serve the Medicaid population in the future. The IMI looks forward to highlighting the ways in which Medicaid managed care organizations have made a meaningful impact within the communities they serve during these precedented times,” shared IMI founding executive director Dr. Jennifer E. Moore. “Through this grant, we hope to outline exemplar practices where health plans have partnered with community-based organizations, providing insight on how to embed equity within any approach.”

At the Institute for Medicaid Innovation, we are seeing firsthand the important role Medicaid health plans play to support the overall health of their members as well as the urgent need for plans to address the underlying social determinants of health impacting member populations. We believe the research and dissemination this grant will support will have a significant impact on Medicaid health plans’ development of equitable, community-based approaches to health during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

If you know of a program or are a Medicaid managed care organization interested in submitting your initiative for consideration in the compendium, please complete the Request for Information no later than December 10, 2021.

An esteemed group of national and local Medicaid experts and thought leaders were selected to serve on the project’s steering committee members, including:
