New Report Highlights Practices to Better Address Needs of Sexual and Gender Minorities in Medicaid

Washington, DC – The Institute for Medicaid Innovation (IMI), the non-profit Medicaid research group, highlights how Medicaid managed care organizations and clinical practices can better address the needs of LGBTQ individuals in the new report “Sexual and Gender Minorities: Opportunities for Medicaid Health Plans and Clinicians.”

LGBTQ individuals experience unique health risks and barriers to care due to the simultaneous experience of intersecting identities, discrimination and social stigma. LGBTQ individuals are more likely to be uninsured, and therefore, Medicaid coverage may mitigate some of those barriers and risks. To ensure that LGBTQ individuals are receiving necessary services, health plans and clinics can take steps to create more inclusive environments for patients. However, without comprehensive data including accurate information about an enrollee’s LGBTQ status, clinicians and health plans may be unable to tailor their education efforts and care plans to specific needs.

“Health plans and providers have many opportunities to improve the health care experience for sexual and gender minority people and to ease the significant mental and physical health burdens that they face,” said Scott Cook, PhD, co-author of the report. “This report serves as a resource to guide and support this important work.”

The authors of the report identified important clinical, research and policy recommendations, including: address all aspects of a patient’s identity in health care, ensure that patients receive care based on their needs from appropriate clinicians, create welcoming physical environments at health centers and at health plans, and improve data collection efforts. The Institute for Medicaid Innovation hopes relevant stakeholders can use this information to improve access to and quality of care for LGBTQ individuals in Medicaid.
