Nurses Respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic for the Medicaid Population

Washington, DC – In follow-up to their initial release, the Institute for Medicaid Innovation (IMI), a non-profit, nonpartisan research and policy organization, released an update to their compendium featuring profiles of nurses who work directly with the Medicaid population. The update includes profiles on nurse experiences with COVID-19, and how the pandemic has affected their work and interactions with patients. The compendium builds on the year-long celebration of the World Health Organization’s International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, focusing on the unique contributions of nurses working at Medicaid health plans. This new compendium update features nurses from a variety of health plans, including Aetna, Gateway Health, L.A. Care, and Upper Peninsula Health Plan.

The first phase of the compendium was released in conjunction with National Nurses Day and arrived at a critical time, as the day-to-day interactions nurses have with the Medicaid population have shifted drastically in the face of COVID-19. “The impact of nurses and midwives in the United States is immeasurable and nothing could emphasize their critical role more than right now,” writes founding executive director of IMI, Dr. Jennifer Moore. “It only seems fitting that 2020 would truly be the ‘Year of the Nurse and Midwife.’” This new compendium update continues to spotlight the critical work nurses and midwives provide to the Medicaid community – showcasing firsthand the impact COVID-19 has had on daily care.

The nurses featured in this compendium have dedicated their career to caring for the nation’s most vulnerable population, one that finds itself at the greatest risk of being impacted socially, physically, and mentally by the pandemic. Nurses and midwives who serve the Medicaid population work to overcome insurmountable challenges to ensure the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. We honor them by highlighting their stories and thanking them for their service.
